Daily Exploration:
1. Don’t walk-n-check.
For the next 24 hours, keep your phone in your pocket while you’re walking or standing anywhere. Yes, even while waiting in line. The harder it is for you to do this, the bigger a signal that you need a “phonetervention.”
2. Leave your phone in another room with notifications off during meals.
If you’re a digital native, you likely don’t even consider the possibility that checking during meals or conversations might be rude. Or you follow what Sherry Turkle calls the rule of three: as long as three people at a table are looking up, you’re allowed to look down. For one day, try being the person who is always looking up. If it’s impractical to have your phone either off your body or somewhere unreachable, then, at a bare minimum, keep it in a bag and turn off notifications. Yes, I know it’s hard. And you will live. Special note: if you truly have something urgent that you have to be “on call” for, like a wife in labor or a critical job option that will require you to pick up or miss out, of course you can make exceptions that are legitimate, so you can carry out this exploration in a way that honors its spirit but keeps you feeling okay.
3. Call someone.
Wait, but didn’t I just say to put it down? I want you to do something very strange with your phone. Something you may rarely do anymore. Turns out your phone has a hidden function. Not many people know about it, but in an emergency, you can use it. It’s called, wait for it . . . a phone. You can actually use your phone to call and speak with people. For real! Pick one person who would normally be on your text list today and, instead, put on your headset, dial their number, put the phone in your pocket, and kick back and talk.
As always, take a few minutes at the end of the day today to journal how it all went, what you noticed, and what you learned.
